Happy Holidays!

Comment

The weather is getting colder, our plants are snuggled up under row covers and the kids need jackets to come out to the garden. Well, maybe not. That hasn't quite been the case yet this winter but we're not complaining (and neither are our Wednesday Weeders!)! Since our last update, we've had big plans a brewin'. Stay tuned on Facebook and Twitter to help make these plans come to life and create a better and healthier Alabama with a greenhouse, aquaponics system, community gardens, a School Garden Incubation Program and a compost system among other exciting projects we have in the works!

This past year, over 200 elementary students learned about healthy eating each week, made their student-run Farm Stand with its Budding Entrepreneurs Program a weekly fixture at University Place Elementary, created pathways to fresh, healthy foods and worked with over 170 University of Alabama students in service-learning classes.

We want for YOU to help us further our mission of building community through food in 2013. This holiday season, consider donating to DCGP, sparing a few tools or classroom supplies, or volunteering in our regular work days. We'd sure love to have your continued support and guarantee that every dollar you donate will go directly to helping build a healthier, more sustainable Alabama and supporting kids like these.

Happy Holidays from everyone at DCGP!

Sand Mountain Seedbank joins with DCGP

Tucked innocently between suburban houses in Albertville lies a raging and colorful garden, complete with hundreds of varieties of plants, flowers and vegetables. This inspiring garden belongs to Charlotte Hagood, a native Alabamian who dedicates her spare time to keeping and saving heritage Alabama seeds and recording their stories. Charlotte operates the Sand Mountain Seedbank and boasts an impressive array of native vegetables, flowers and perennial plant seeds, many of which found their way back to the bank after leaving Alabama during the Trail of Tears.

DCGP is excited to begin partnering with the Seedbank and learning more about how to save our seeds! Charlotte gave us a brief tutorial on some easy starts – lettuce, garlic, beans – and then treated us to a wonderful tour of the garden. She generously gave us several varieties to start with and promised to be patient with us as we learn how to make this work.

We just know the kids will love hearing the stories about these seeds and it will help us connect them in another way back to Alabama's rich agricultural history as well as teaching the full life-cycle of plants. A Great Success at The Garden Party!

Thanks to everyone who turned out to the first annual Garden Party this past Sunday! The event was a huge success and helped us raise a good amount of money for the Druid City Garden Project. By our counts around 350 people, using every ticket available, packed the L&N train station to enjoy delicious goods from seven Tuscaloosa restaurants, beer from Birmingham and wine from Calera. Our farmers and restaurants worked excellently together to bring truly local (and delicious!) food to us. Plus, with the Red Mountain White Trash old-time string band playing up a storm, it was almost impossible to have a bad time. All that and a great turnout to the screening of Eating Alabama made for a wonderful Tuscaloosa night. We were honored to put on such a fun event in town and hope to make it a recurring occurrence as we work to build a more healthy and sustainable food system in Alabama.

Swine & Wine Twilight Supper A Success!

Comment

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the DCGP at the Swine & Wine Twilight Supper in Birmingham last weekend! It was a great success and we managed to raise a lot of money to support our educational outreach initiative at University Place Elementary School! By our estimates, the event drew crowds of more than 300, all eager to partake of the delectable feast prepared by some of the Southeast's finest chefs - roasted pig, pork belly buns, porchetta, wood-fired pizza, deviled eggs with Tasso, spicy coleslaw, asparagus, dirty rice, and more!

We are honored to have been a part of such a wonderful event and look forward to dining with Y'all again next year! Thanks so much to Clif and Maureen Holt of Little Savannah!
